Football Gold!

“All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy.”

University life is not all about studies and homework. Sports and other fun activities play an important role in making it one of the most memorable parts of our life. Keeping this in mind, the Kyushu University Foreign Students Association (KUFSA) keeps an annual Football Tournament and our very own IUPE students participate in it actively.
This year too, the IUPE team, cheekily named ‘Benchwarmers F.C.’ took part in it, and returned home with…wait for it…yes, the trophy and the gold medal!! The competition had different teams comprising of Arabs, Chinese, Africans, Vietnamese, Indonesians and also a few Latin American countries. Our team consisted of IUPE students and also a few of our Japanese friends. The teams were divide into two groups of four teams each, and each team had three games in the group stages. The IUPE team cruised to the semifinals where they had to meet their archrivals, ‘The African Lions’. What ensued was an exciting battle of speed and technique and in the end, we managed to get into the finals. Our last hurdle was the team from China, called the CHN United.

Determined to take the trophy, we set onto the field for the most thrilling match of the day. The match ended in a 3-3 draw, and it went on to the dreaded penalty shootouts. The penalty shootouts saw all kinds of emotions in the field, as Benchwarmers saved two shoots, and emerged victorious. And as an icing on the cake, our very won third year student Leo, bagged the prize for the top goal-scorer of the tournament. The KUFSA football tournament is a platform for people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, to come together and revel in the spirit of the game of football. It is not only about winning, but also about making friends and creating everlasting memories.
