Experience sharing: our memorable time at PCY 2016

Peace Conference of Youth (PCY), hosted annually by Junior Chamber International Osaka (JCI Osaka), brings aspiring youth from all over the globe together to discuss and come up with creative action plans that can address critical problems facing humanity. As a fully funded conference, PCY is a life-changing opportunity where participants can exchange different ideas and enhance their knowledge about sustainable development.

PCY 2016, themed as Wave of Happiness, particularly focused on solving issues related to drinking water. This year, Kyushu University is very proud to be represented by 3 IUPE students (Nam, Phong and Hiroshima). They are going to tell their stories in this article.

Charming Osaka Castle, but some people were missing :’(

For me, PCY is very special because it has fundamentally changed my life. At PCY, I was able to express my own perspectives and make friends with those who share the same passion of becoming active global citizens. In a team of 8 members, our group developed a social business project that utilizes insects to both protect the environment and ensure reasonable living standards for the local community. What is more, on the final day of PCY, we delivered an amazing 30-minute speech in front of 1000 people at World EXPO 2016 in Osaka. My part was 3-minute long and that was the first time ever in my life to make such an important speech.
Returning from PCY 2016, I have become more knowledgeable, confident and sociable. That conference was definitely a once-in-a-life-time opportunity for me, so I really recommend other students to apply for PCY 2017. :D

At PCY 2016, I met a lot of new friends who came from all over the world. Spending time in such a diverse environment has remarkably changed the way I view everything around me. Throughout my coursework at PCY, I realized that there are still many people out there who lack access to even a basic human need like drinking water. That made me feel determined to develop our group’s action plan, which focuses on how to transport water to remote areas where residents normally spend hours fetching water.
At PCY 2016, we were provided with free accommodation and free meals at Cosmos Square Hotel. Honestly speaking, it is the nicest hotel I have stayed so far.
Also, my Japanese has been improved a lot since PCY 2016 because I still keep in touch with some Japanese friends. I really want to invite them to visit Vietnam in the future.
So take your time and apply for PCY 2017 J.

 Our final poster presentation

Travelling to Osaka for PCY 2016 marked the first time that I had travelled on a bullet train (or shinkansen in Japanese). I was very satisfied as the speed was amazingly high and the seat was comfortable. At PCY, the project that my group worked on was named Water League, it is a festival where we raise participants’ awareness regarding drinking water shortage through interactive quizzes and games. I really want to thank our conference coordinator, Professor Hawking from Osaka University, who assisted us a lot to elaborate our project throughout PCY 2016. We had gone a really long way from the original idea to the final presentation.
Apart from discussion time, we also went shopping, ate octopus balls (takoyaki) at a well-known traditional restaurant, and visited Osaka Castle.
Apply for PCY 2017 and contribute your ideas towards a better world!!! =))
