A Walk Through History

The pages of history have seen a lot of tears and smiles throughout the course of time. The world changed irrevocably, when atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. The horrors of the aftermath have been so profound that they sparked international protests against the use of nuclear weapons and a quest for world peace.

Last weekend, Kyushu University Foreign Students Association (KUFSA) organized a trip to Nagasaki where we visited the Atomic Bomb Memorial Museum.

The museum was an enlightening experience for all of us. It is a solemn space for people from Japan and around the world to mourn the victims of the disaster and to pray for a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons. It exhibits many artifacts that were subject to extreme degrees of temperature due to the bombings. You can witness half-melted porcelain plates and charred metal objects. There are also photographs of the charred bodies that were found. One such moving piece of artifact was the burned bento box of a schoolgirl.

The museum also houses a topographic model of the city of Nagasaki and how it was affected by the blast of the bomb. You also get to see the life size model of the bomb and for a second you are filled with awe, but at the same time also realizing that this piece of scientific wonder caused the death of countless innocent lives.

Even now the remains of the magnificent collapsed cathedral, scorched clothes and melted bottles silently tell a story. We hope that the message of peace continues to relay over from Nagasaki and Hiroshima and the other war stricken nations around the world, in the hope that the people of the world can join hands and face a future free of weapons and terror.
