Short Escape to Fukuoka’s Global Community
Starting a new semester for me also means a new thing to experience within my residence in Japan. When I was in Indonesia back then, I saw the information from ISU’s Facebook Page posted by Tamura Sensei. I thought the event is very interesting and also a new thing for me to try, so that I applied by the website. Facing a trouble while applying, I keep trying although it seems not working. Shortly, 2 days before the D-day, I suddenly got the invitation coming to my room that made me extremely enthusiastic.
The event was held in Okura Hotel, near Nakasu-Kawabata in the afternoon. I, Abdu, Nam and Tamura Sensei went there together. After I gave my invitation card to the committee, I got a name card with a table number. I sat on a table with the other five people, 3 of us are students from universities in Fukuoka, and the 3 other men are working with a high position in a company. We are also given a kind of walkie-talkie which have channels for translation to either English or Japanese. We do not need to worry about not understanding the presentation or discussion.
The conference was started by opening remarks given by Fukuoka City Mayor, Mr. Takashima Soichiro and Consulate-General of Korea, China, Australia, Vietnam, and America in Fukuoka. The keynote speech was about a university in Vietnam which is getting internationalized by opening branches around Asia and offering many exchange programs, in prior to Japan. The vice chairman was Vietnamese, named Nguyen Thanh Nam, who is a graduate from an American university so that he is really open-minded about the prospect of international students and their career overseas. Next, Mr. Hatano Yoshio gave a presentation which title is “Global talent now from the view of companies” as he is a chairman for Chuo Electric Works Ltd. in Osaka. His speech was very motivating for international students to try working in Japanese companies as the young generation of Japan is declining. Moreover, he explained about the reasons why do Japanese companies need to recruit international students in this globalization era.
After those keynote speech, there was a panel discussion about expectations for global talent and the role of global talent in Fukuoka. One of the panellists are Mr. Ohta Kazuhide, who is a professor and AQ Program Leader at Kyushu University, following with Mr. Ryuzoji Kensuke, President & CEO of Honda Kiko Co., Ltd., Mr. Fujimi Tetsuro, an executive concierge from Startup Cafe which is located in Tsutaya and dedicated for new beginners in entrepreneurship, and last Mr. Sakurai Takafumi who is a manager of Graduate Recruitment division of Recruit Career Co.
