My First Internship Experience

Name: Sonali Batra
Course: Aerospace Engineering.
Class of 2011
During my 2014 spring vacations, I decided to do something more productive than just relaxing during vacations back home. I wanted to get some hands-on experience with how manufacturing companies work. I believe it’s always better to get some practical knowledge than theoretical ideas. Therefore, I decided to go for an internship at a Japanese company in India. This was a unique experience for me because I learned how Indian people were working in a Japanese atmosphere, in India. My internship was for a week during which I was exposed to around 14 different departments of the Hitachi Home & Life Solutions, India. (HHLI, subsidiary of Hitachi, Japan) I got a chance to interact with people from different departments and how they coordinate together to finally provide the best consumer products to the Indian market. The departments included Human Resources, Business Planning, Production, Quality Management, Storage, Logistics, Legal, among many others. My internship also included various factory visits and laboratory visits. These visits exposed me to the processes involved in the production of air-conditioners and how quality checks are performed on these consumer goods. The HHLI plant in Gujarat, India is the biggest manufacturing plant in India and comes in the top 10 manufacturing plants of the world. I was honored to be get such an opportunity to be a part of a huge manufacturing industry. This internship not only gave practicality to my theoretical fundamentals but also led me to understand how important it is to coordinate and manage our ideas and work with other people. Also, a special thanks to my university for providing me with a letter of recommendation to get selected for this internship. I would highly recommend students to get this kind of hands-on experience to broaden their understanding in their field of study.
