What “Integration” Means to Me as a Kyushu University Student
In June, 2014, I was given the opportunity to attend the Global Cultural Engagement Convention held at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The main project started with how to build integration on between the foreign and the local students in the participants’ universities through the four subjects: Food, Body Language, Humor, and Gender roles. I was in a group of Food and we came up with an idea of holding monthly restaurants to promote foods all over the world that both foreign and local students made because we thought it was the easiest way to destruct the wall between local and foreign students often had, and rather build integration.

Then, it was my turn to speak about what I think “integration” is and to introduce Kyushu University in that matter. I tried my best to convey the system in our university, as well as my true thoughts about the life as an international student in Kyushu University. I started the presentation on what integration meant for me. As an engineering student, first thing that comes to mind when talking about integration is ∫irs)dx=F(x)+α. Integration between people was not much different from the mathematical integration. Integration is something which when we build it, we might not notice it but it will add up in the end and make a difference in our experiences and growth. This was priceless in that I could interact with people from different ages and cultural backgrounds, and mostly share about my thoughts about integration and what our school, Kyushu University is doing to promote it.
